Gender Disparity in Education in Pakistan

Pakistan is a federation of four provinces joined with by the federal capital area, the federally administered tribal area and the Azad Jammu and Kashmir. It also has different culture and social norms and values in each of the province and the administered area, which makes it very diverse culturally. In Pakistan men and women are separated into two spheres conceptually. With men being regarded as the head of the family who makes all the decisions and is responsible for the bread and butter of the house hence controls the finances. Women on the other hand are seen as only housewives whose basic duty is to take care of the house and upbringing of the children. Other than that woman has very minor or no role in the social set up. That being the core reason for the discrimination against women since time when Pakistan got independence and when it comes to education girls are the least to have that right because there is a preference for boys education among parents due to the school of thought that males are responsible to run the house, so education his education should come foremost as compared to females.
As far as the basic right of every individual to get education as stated in constitution of Pakistan, the state has done little in terms of providing education to girls. Though in recent decade enrollment of females has increased but still a lot needs to be done. As there is still a wide gender gap in education in the rural areas based on the finding of the past research conducted by different organizations such World Bank and UNESCO. Social and cultural norms and most importantly poverty has been the main obstacle to girl’s education for the past many years. A lot needs to be done in terms of pin-pointing the problems that are causing such wide gap in education among gender and also coming up with not only effective but efficient policies for the betterment of the education system.
